Mobile Oil Change Business and Company Comparisons

We have been reviewing articles in Oil Lube Magazines, Newsletters, ASO, ASE, Auto Mechanic and many other periodicals on the assessments and profitability of mobile oil change units. We believe that many of the surveyed may have misrepresented their actual results, however have brought to you some of the findings which have been written about in these comparison surveys and reports. Even though the surveys and periodicals have much credibility, I believe that the studied set of operators have been to few in numbers to be accurate and even one of the magazines admitted that the survey was plus or minus 5% at best.

We believe 15% although are rather miffed at the fact that no one really seems to know the real results of such efforts by individual operators. In the survey in one newspaper in the Industry they found that only ten percent of the mobile oil change units to be franchised and 90% independent operators. The same publication said that the average radius of service was 51 miles and had at least 21 fixed site operators in their market which was an increase from previous studies. The average ticket price was said to be $39.00 and average cost of goods sold was $8.40. Average company had 1.6 vans. Vans were the most popular units used about 52% of the time, bobtail trucks 10% of the time and pick-ups 5% of the time. An average of 4.4 vehicles per stop were said to be serviced. 70% of the companies serviced mostly fleets. We have not found this to be the case in our actual ride along studies with competitors and team members; http://www.OilChangeGuys.com

The average company serviced 12.2 cars or units as they called them each day. Average lube only price was $28.22 only $4.00 more than Jiffy Lube. Insurance costs, which we did concur with is an average of $1,946.00 up from previous years as we also have found. Average cost for a Semi truck lube only was $85.61, which seems a little low and quite a deal for trucking companies and companies with lots of units such as cement companies. Number one type of advertising was word of mouth and vehicle signage. Yellow Pages was the third. 56% of the companies surveyed in one publication did off road heavy equipment. 32% did some marine or boats. Over 60% had done generators although few on a regular basis. 40% claimed they made 100K last year, 33% said they did over 50K anf 27% said under 50K.

We are relatively uncertain about these numbers in particular, way to vague and questionable as per our research, perhaps they are true. 66.5% of respondents said they did School Bus or tour bus oil changing and serviced their fleets. Average pay was fair at $11.44 for workers, higher than Jiffy Lube and all Wal-Mart Stores. The cost to set up a van unit was an average of $8,941.00 we feel this is about right considering the under equipped units that we had seen previously. Operators said their breakeven point on average was 6.3 units. We also questioned this and think it to be a little higher if everyone looks at all costs and averages them over the number of days worked and also needing to be taken into consideration were the real wear and tear depreciation that exists. One recent consultant to our team said that if one counts all costs that these numbers are apparently to low for break even number of units and how many days did they really work and how many days did they average and what climate are they in? Some areas cannot work due to weather certain times of the year.

Car Wash and Wax: Ways to Save Yourself Time and Money With the Right Products

Back in the day, there was no such thing as an all-in-one car wash and car wax product. If you wanted to wash and wax your car, you had to have a bucketful of items and special cloths handy to do so. Luckily, cleaning and waxing a vehicle is no longer the time-consuming endeavor that it once were. Nowadays, you may clean and gloss your vehicle in one fell swoop, thanks to waterless car cleaning products that also contain wax.

Waterless car wash products both wash and polish your car and don't need using water. These products break down and move dirt and grime in the surface of your vehicle. All you need to do is spray that solution on the car, rub it in a round movement with a terry cloth to remove dirt, and then buff the haze this is left with a microfiber cloth. Not only will this kind of car wash/wax conserve you 20 to 50 gallons of water per vehicle, it will also save you time and money.

Tips for Choosing a Waterless Car Wash Products
There are many types of waterless car detailing items in the market, but not all of them are designed alike. Here are some things to consider if you're planning to purchase car cleaning products:
Active Ingredients. What ingredients does the item contain? Some waterless washes contain carnauba wax others contain clay, and others are polish-based. The best quality car wash/wax solutions generally possess carnauba wax as an active component. Carnauba wax is a vegetable fat extracted from a Brazilian palm tree.

Price and Value. Typically, a can of waterless wash and wax costs $19. 99 and possesses 17. 50 oz, but amounts differ depending on what brand name you purchase. In addition, make sure if the car wash comes in a value pack that includes free gifts and whether discounts are available if you order in wholesale.

Convenience. Is the auto detailing product simple to apply and scrub off? Make certain the spray end of the waterless wash stays in position when you use it. Additionally, the formula must also be simple to wipe off the surface of your car, so you don't turn out damaging your vehicle.

The Eye Witness To Your Getting Creamed

Thirty four years ago, in a book I wrote and was published, entitled, How To Settle Your Own Insurance Claim, I stated: "An eye witness can make or break your case. If you've been able to keep your wits about you the first thing you should do, immediately after impact has occurred, is to find somebody who observed it. After having spotted such a person, don't be bashful. Go right over to them and ask if they saw the accident ? If they did, jot down their name, address and telephone number. Should they drive away before you can zero in on them, make note of their motor vehicle's registration number so you can later obtain their name through the department of motor vehicle office."

What I wrote, over thirty years ago, remains true today. (As a matter of fact, when it comes to insurance claims, little has changed over he past sixty years)! Companies like Rock Solid Insurance Corporation are still raising rates into the stratosphere while crying in their suds about all the money claims are costing them and those employed by them are still taking advantage of every motor vehicle accident victim they can sink their claws into.

A WITNESS CAN BE CRUCIAL: When you've been smashed into one of the most important sources of help - - when it comes to digging up information and assembling a record of the accident - - is the eye witness to that impact, with their accounts and recollections as to what happened. Try to secure a detailed written statement (or tape recorded or maybe even a video statement) from them. That "witness person" could be a passenger in your own or other vehicles, pedestrians, onlookers and bystanders at the scene of the accident, and/or driver's of other motor vehicle's who were not directly involve in the accident.

UTILIZING THE WITNESS: How do you actually go about the task of securing the relevant witnesses, testimonies and cooperation? To begin with, know this: It's important that you get to a witness first - - before that a fast talking adjuster corners them and uses his expertise to twist the facts. By moving quickly you stand a good chance of getting the witness committed to your account of the events and/or to come down on your side of the case. If they do that's money in the bank!

You should contact each witness of the accident (identified from the list of persons you compiled at the time of the accident - - or perhaps even discovered in the police report) and talk to them about what they saw, or know, concerning the accident. The ideal procedure is to get them to write out, in detail, what they observed, in their own words. If they're not willing (or able) to do this, then write their statement yourself (or merely jot down on a pad) what each witness tells you, then have them sign and date it. Try to capture their recollections, impressions and observations of what happened.

Upon completing the interview of each witness, and taking his (or her) statement, ask that individual to read it. When they're finished have them sign and date it, with their home address and phone number included. (If the statement is more than one page have them initial and date the bottom of each page, then ask them to apply their full and complete signature at the very end.)

You should make a copy of what they signed and send it to them. That's so they'll know exactly what they told you - - if, later on down the road, when the adjuster try's to hustle and con them into stating something differently - - they'll be able to stick to their guns because they'll have written proof to show that adjuster exactly what they told you.

LOCATING A MISSING WITNESS: You may be unable to directly contact or locate the whereabouts of a witness whose name, home address or phone number you have obtained. (The witness may have moved). Here are two helpful steps you can take to locate a witness:

1. Send a "Certified" or "Registered" letter to that witness, addressed to his (or her) last known address with the "Return Receipt Requested" plus the "Address Only" box checked off. This way, if you receive back from the post office the return receipt signed by the witness, or executed by the post office, you should find, fully entered therein, the current address of the witness.

2. If you have their full name and address and you're comfortable surfing through cyber-space there are dozens of ways to locate a person via your computer. Should you not be wise to the ways of the internet find somebody to help you who is.

IN SUMMARY: I spent most of my life investigating motor vehicle accidents. First as I worked my way through college as a Private Investigator, specifically assigned to motor vehicle accidents, next as a Special Investigator in the United States Navy, covering major military motor vehicle accidents in the mid-west, and then, after my naval daze, over thirty years as a Claims Adjuster, Supervisor, Manager and Trial Assistant. I know, from personal experience, a witness to a motor vehicle accident can be invaluable when it comes to making your case. Witnesses may be able to describe things in an accident that confirm what you know happened, thus backing up your side of the story. They may also provide you with information you were not aware of, which indicates how the other operator was at fault. A witness may have heard a verbal remark that someone other than you was at fault. Even a witness, who did not actually see your motor vehicle get crashed into, may have observed you, soon after impact, and confirm the pain and discomfort you were experiencing. A signed statement handed to Adjuster Hard-Nose, taken from somebody who did not know you personally, detailing the suffering you were enduring at the scene, right after you were bashed into, is even more money in the bank!

The Top 5 Ways To Add Extra Ponies To Your Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo

The Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo has one of the most powerful engines created for the best Nissans. The VG30DETT has huge amounts of potential. This engine is putting out 300hp and almost 290 foot Lbs. of torque stock! The twin turbocharged and inter-cooled engine lacks very little. Read on to find the 5 most cost effective modifications to give you the most horsepower for your hard earned dollar!

#5

Throttle body modification:

The throttle body modification isn’t going to be the biggest gain in hp in the world, but the best part is, it’s FREE! In case you missed that, yes, its completely free! All you need for this modification is a metal file or a 10mm wrench (depending on what year 300zx). All you have to do is simply remove a nut or a bump of molded aluminum that is sitting right by your throttle cable. This bump or nut is preventing your throttle from being able to open completely. By allowing it to open completely you’ve increased your air flow which increases your horse power.

#4

Upgraded air filter:

An upgraded air filter is the most basic of all modifications. Adding a higher flow filter is going to allow your Nissan cars [http://www.jdm-4u.com/nissan_cars.htm] engine to consume a much larger amount of oxygen then the stock air box. Imagine attempting to run a mile while using a straw to breath. It’s not a lot different for your car if you modify the car and not the air filter.

#3

Upgraged exhaust system:

An upgraded exhaust system is the same concept as upgrading your air filter. All the air that is being consumed by the engine needs to be evacuated. The problem that many people run into is they go about doing this the completely wrong way. BIGGER IS NOT BETTER! Having an exhaust that is to large for your car is actually going to hurt your 300zx’s performance. You should have no more than a 3 inch system unless you plan on running somewhere around 1000hp! This problem is somewhat obvious, but one that very few people think of; the bigger exhaust drops exhaust temperatures considerably. Having a lower temperature means the air traveling through the exhaust system is going to be much heavier and thus harder to move, which hurts your engines performance. Installing the correct exhaust size is going to give you the correct temperature of exhaust and will evacuate the air effectively. Contrary to what many think, a car doesn’t actually lose horse power because it has a large exhaust because of a loss of back pressure. It looses horsepower with a large exhaust because of turbulence and the cold dense air.

#2

Upgraded computer chip:

An upgraded computer chip is one of the easiest modifications. Upgrading the chip will enrich the fuel curve. This gives your car a bit more fuel to support the added power. Some also say it will help cool the pistons. In addition to the added fuel, the JWT chip maximizes the engine's ignition timing and also tunes the cam timing. Most of the chips out there will have a couple additional features like raising the rev-limiter 200 rpm, and eliminating the top speed governor. Having an aftermarket ECU is nice because of the ease of calibration for future modifications like higher boost levels.

#1

Boost controller or boost jets:

Boost controllers and boost jets are the recommended way to increasing your boost pressure. Adding a boost controller essentially tricks your waste gates, waste gates vent boost allowing the car to just run at 8 psi. The boost controller or boost jets trick the waste gates into thinking that there is less boost than there really is meaning you will have a quicker spool up time and a large increase in total boost pressure. Boost pressure equals power. Running higher boost pressure is only capable after an ECU upgrade. Investing in a turbo timer is also a good idea when running higher than stock boost, as a turbo timer will help cool your turbos when its time to shut down.

Understanding Trailer Brake Controllers

An electric trailer brake controller is a device that supplies power from a tow vehicle to a trailer's electric brakes. There are two types of brake controllers on the market today - Time Delay Activated and Inertia Activated.

While the controllers operate differently, they are very similar. Both types have the same wiring configuration. Both allow the driver to adjust the amount of braking power and both have a pressure sensitive manual override switch that can be used to apply the trailer brakes independently of the tow vehicle.

Time Delay Activated Brake Controls

Time Delay Activated or "solid state" controllers are enabled by the depressing of the brake pedal in the tow vehicle. Once enabled, time delay activated controllers apply a gradual voltage to the trailer's brakes using a Time Delay Circuit.

The advantages of a solid state brake control unit are the inexpensive cost, low profile, and they can be mounted at any angle. The disadvantages mostly pertain to Hazard Flashers issues. In most applications the digital display will flash with the hazard flashers and if the gain is set aggressively, some pulsing of the trailer brakes may be felt.

Hazard Flasher issues can be resolved by using a Pulse Preventer that will isolate the brake control from the vehicles flashers, thus eliminating the pulsing.

Inertia Activated Brake Controls

Inertia Activated Brake Controllers or Pendulum Style controllers are enabled by the depressing of the brake pedal and activated by a Pendulum Circuit that senses the stopping motion of the vehicle. The Pendulum Circuit applies a proportional voltage to the trailer's brakes.

When the Inertia activated brake control is properly adjusted, the trailer will decelerate at the same speed as the towing vehicle. A result of this is increased braking efficiency and reduced wear on the brakes.

Advantages of pendulum style controllers are efficient braking under a variety of braking conditions including adverse conditions. They also have a smooth braking motion.

Pendulum style controllers have a few disadvantages also. They tend to be larger than solid state controller. They usually more expensive and they must be mounted in a level position. Tekonsha's Prodigy controller is an exception. Due to its innovative technology, it can be mounted in almost any position.

Whether the brake control is Timer Activated or Inertia Activated, the gain can be adjusted by the user. Both feature a pressure sensitive switch that can be used to apply the trailer brakes independent of the tow vehicle. Most importantly, both styles achieve the same goal safely and reliably.

The BACKGROUND Of China Motorcycles

The first motorcycle was likely built in 1885 by German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, although motorized bicycles were present in the eastern United States as early as 1865. Regardless, a motorcycle typically comprises two wheels with one being a front wheel and the other being a rear wheel. These wheels have a central hub, which rotates about an axel that is connected to the motorcycle frame. Additionally, the rear wheel is typically the drive-wheel, whereas the front wheel is not usually powered.

China Motorcycles

August 1951, China officially has begun to trial, production of motorcycles, cars by the then People's Liberation Army Beijing with Liu Chang completed a system of five heavy military motorcycle trial tasks, named by the Central Military Commission Jinggangshan card.

The car speeds up to 110 kilometers per hour. By 1953, annual production exceeded Jinggangshan brand motorcycles 1000. The advent of Jinggangshan motorcycle, marking China's motorcycle industry has opened up a new era.

The past 30 years, China's motorcycle industry growth rate faster. Yield from the product point of view, with an annual output of 49,000 from 1980 to 1990 the development of 970,000, and today, more than a thousand million, China became the world's largest motorcycle production country, motorcycles have been become a pillar industry of national economy - an important part of the automotive industry.

Future of China Motorcycles

Motorcycle through a hundred years storm, is moving towards newer, faster, safer direction.
The introduction of the modern motorcycle industry a lot of advanced technology.

Such as the Harley - Davidson launched in 1998 FLHRC-1-type motor, the engine uses the world's top automotive engine technology - fuel injection equipment, not only improve the power, but also for the environmental needs of contemporary society, has become a 21st century motorcycle pioneer.

The electronic control system for optical communications, radar distance control system, electronic map navigation systems, sound systems, high-tech electronic muffler motorcycle in a number of concepts in the use of the modern motorcycle is more perfect, more a shocking . Of course, no matter how it changes, we can see the shadow of a hundred years ago Dai car. Here, Daimler should be deeply gratifying.

Chamomile Tea For Digestion

Chamomile tea has been known for centuries for its soothing and relaxing properties, being used commonly to aid with problems such as insomnia, nervousness, as well as a comforting remedy during illnesses such as colds and flu. What many people don't know is that chamomile tea is an excellent remedy to help with digestion. Poor digestion is likely rooted in our poor food choices, poor eating habits and the fast-paced lifestyles. Correcting these are the key to having a health digestive system, but there are things that can be done to help alleviate daily chronic symptoms that many people experience such as gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. One of the best herbal remedies as a "cure-all" for nearly all digestive problems, is drinking a high quality chamomile tea.

Chamomile tea contains essential oils and flavanoids, which actually relax the smooth muscles in the digestive tract, to relieve pain and cramping and promote normal peristalsis (the contractions of your intestinal tract that help move food along).

Another class of compounds called sesquiterpenes, have anti-inflammatory effects which helps soothe the irritated lining of the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the inflammation associated with poor digestion. This tea also acts as a relaxant, to help calm down nervousness and tension. Many people who suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) also suffer from symptoms of anxiety, which have been shown to contribute to their digestive complaints. It is well known that the digestive tract has many connections to the central nervous system, and therefore anxiety and emotional issues can have a huge impact on how your body digests food. By drinking chamomile tea regularly, and calming the system, people with IBS can help their symptoms by directly affecting their digestive tract, and indirectly by helping to relieve nervousness.

For people who have very mild digestion issues, drinking chamomile tea on "as-needed" basis is sufficient.

However, for people with chronic symptoms it is important to be able to get a high enough dose of the beneficial compounds, which can be achieved by drinking 3 to 5 cups per day, on a regular basis. Use 2 tsp of flower per cup, and infuse for 5 -10 minutes covered. Drink the tea while still hot, before all the beneficial essential oils evaporate.

The importance of drinking a high quality chamomile tea cannot be understated. Most grocery-store brands contain merely the "dust" and bits of flower that remain after sorting and packaging. Choose a brand that consists of high quality loose whole flowers, which contain the highest concentration of beneficial compounds to ensure that you get the freshest, most flavorful and health-promoting cup of tea.

* For those with allergies to ragweed, please use caution with chamomile, as it is part of the same family of herbs as ragweed, and some people may experience a cross-reaction. Try a cup or two, and if no allergy symptoms appear (such as an itchy throat) then you're probably fine.

*Women who are pregnant should not drink chamomile tea.

Car Reviews: Widening Automotive Industries Wings

Cars have become one of the major necessities of life of the modern world. Knowing how to drive a car or any other vehicle offers a massive statement of independence. You can go anywhere without having to depend on people to take you there. The current market scenario offers a competitive market with the availability of a wide range of models, many of which have the possibility of enticing the customer to purchase them.

Internet encroachments have opened gateways of information which can be accessed by anyone at any point of time. Car reviews have gained huge popularity as they offer assistance to affect the decision making power of an individual. Understanding the fact that the reason or criteria of purchasing a car differs from buyer to buyer and so does the proffering of each and every model. When planning to purchase a dream car for self it is vital to conduct a research on the same, that is where online reviews come to fore.

Car reviews act as guidelines for buyers only if they offer all the basic needs which a car buyer desires.

An effective car review must provide for the best possible information to the reader which assists in making the ultimate decision and steer clears the doubts and confusions that may affect the buying decision. Based on this the first vital component offered by a car review must be a basic introduction about the model. The review must also offer information about the make and model along with a short yet insightful portray about the history of the car and company. It is also crucial that the review lays emphasis on the performance and engine capacity of the car. The exteriors and interiors of the car also play a vital role in enticing the prospective buyer. Therefore a car photograph well beside the review adds to the effectiveness of the review. In the world of tough competition, a well define comparison in terms of performance, pricing, longevity and other related issues with potential counterparts adds to the whole effect of the review.

Thus, write and read to make wise decisions.

Gain 5 Horsepower This Weekend, For Practically Nothing

What if I told you that you can gain 5 horsepower this weekend, for less than $100? Or, what if I told you that you could gain 5 horsepower this weekend, for less than $20?

I bet you'd be interested eh?

Well, the good news is, I'm going to tell you how to gain 5 horsepower this weekend for $0-15 spent. Sound too good to be true? Well, read on!

1) Increase the H2O ratio in your coolant - if it weren't for corrosion and freezing concerns, automotive makers would use pure water. Water cools much better than coolant any day of the week, and a cooler engine is a better performer.

Instead of half and half, try 40/60. DO NOT use pure water, As this may cause premature corrosion and that can be no fun at all to clean up. You may also try water wetter to further enhance this effect.

2) Index your spark plugs - this is an age old trick that is good for about 1 extra pony. The idea here is to "aim" the open end of the spark plug terminal (the gap) towards the intake side of the head. In order to accomplish this, simply mark on the plug a small line to indicate where this gap is, and install the plug as normal.

Try to line up the line with the intake side as best as you can. It may require buying 2 sets of spark plugs in order to do this, but hopefully you'll be able to do this the first time. Be careful with aluminum heads not to over tighten, as that could lead to a costly repair.

3) Relocate IAT Sensor - This is a very simple modification that will work on a great deal of fuel injected vehicles. The IAT sensor ("Intake Air Temperature") tells the computer how hot or cold the incoming air is. The computer will then adjust the amount of fuel being injected, as well as make minor adjustments to timing based on that reading.

The problem is that in many vehicles, the IAT sensor is located in the intake manifold, near the cylinder head. Therefore the air that the IAT sensor "reads" is much hotter than the air, say, in the intake arm. The idea with this mod, is to relocate the sensor to the intake arm. Use JB Weld or similar to patch up the old port for the sensor.

This will cause the computer to believe that incoming air is slightly cooler, causing it to inject more fuel and advance the timing a tad.

4) Synthetic Oil - This is guaranteed to pick up 1-2 horsepower, as multiple dynos over the years have proved this fact. Simply by switching to a true synthetic oil this weekend you can reduce the friction in your engine, improving efficiency, and therefore going faster.

5) Insulate Fuel Lines - When your fuel lines travel through the engine bay they heat up. However, cooler fuel produces more power for more reasons than just cooling down the intake charge--although that certainly helps things!

Your Money, Your Life, or Your Seat Belt

A seat belt is one of those things in life that just doesn't make sense to about 40,000,000 people in the United States. After all, freedom of choice is the Free World cornerstone and when it comes to our automobiles, we want to ride them any way we choose.

"Liberty or death!" shouts a protestor on the nightly news. He values his God-given Freedoms to drive without fear of an illegal search and seizure. "The people," he contends, "aren't idiots and can govern their own safety." Courts determine whether driving without a seat belt is a Right or a Privilege, but "by God we will defend our freedoms 'till our dying breath."

Unfortunately, that's just what happens each year.

What these people don't realize is just what choice they are making when they drive without a seat belt wrapped around everyone in the car.

Government and industry have sponsored multi-million dollar safety seat belt awareness campaigns for decades. Usage has climbed, but only slowly through the years until recently.

It's easy to recognize at least one popular national slogan:

    Buckle Up For Safety
    Seat Belts Save Lives
    Buckle Up America

Officer Friendly would appear in class to teach all about car safety. He didn't come into every room, so some of us were indoctrinated with second hand playground news.

State sponsored campaigns are less well known.

Missouri had the lowest state seat belt usage as the year 2000 approached according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA). Only 60% of Missourians wore seat belts, so in a $300,000 concerted research effort, the State of Missouri studied advertising strategies that would appeal to all age groups. Radio stations received Public Service Announcements, 64 local newspapers printed press releases while two carefully selected slogans were printed on 26 billboards that read:

It takes 3 seconds to buckle up. Dead is Forever
You think a zit is bad? Try a windshield.

Did the State of Missouri reach the target audience?

Results: Seat belt usage among all age groups ...

Escalated to nearly 68% about equal to the national average at the time.

What was the real success?

Hundreds of lives were saved yearly and serious injuries were avoided.

"Click It...Or Ticket" kicked off in May of 2003 as the latest national seat belt campaign with a starting advertising budget of $25 million paid for by the US Government. That's a lot of money to begin an advertising campaign about seat belt usage. Was the purpose to really save lives, build up local treasuries, or just advertise? The results easily speak for themselves...

Safety belt use in the United States rose to almost 80% in 2004(the highest single year increase) up from 58% in 1994. An additional 10% rise in safety seat belt use could save an estimated 8,000 more lives per year and prevent more than 100,000 traffic related accident injuries.

It's estimated that more than 14,000 lives had been saved with seat belt use in data compiled by the NHTSA for 2002. And of the almost 33,000 passenger vehicle occupants who were killed during the same period 59% weren't wearing a safety seat belt. (NHTSA).

18 Tips for Saving Money on Gasoline

Gas prices are on the rise again! Here are some tips to help you conserve gas and save money as we approach summer gas prices.

1. Keep your car tuned up. Cars in poor running condition use more gasoline.

2. Plan trips well to avoid unnecessary driving.

3. When you run your air conditioner you get much worse gas mileage. Use your air conditioner sparingly. If you have a lower setting, use it. Turn it on until the car gets cool, then turn it off and let the fan circulate the cool air. Never run your air conditioner with your windows open!

4. Keep your windows closed when traveling at high speeds. Open windows cause additional drag and lower your gas mileage. At high speeds, an open window can use more gas than many air conditioners (especially if they are on a low setting).

5. Check your tire pressure. Over-inflated tires can actually reduce your fuel efficiency, so don't overfill.

6. If at all possible, change your work start time to avoid gridlock. Stop and go traffic hurts your gas mileage.

7. Take unneeded items out of the car. You don't need to carry snow chains around with you in the summertime. Just make sure to put them back in when winter comes around.

8. Try not to idle your engine for long periods of time. If you are stuck in traffic and you don't think you are going to go anywhere in the next five minutes, you may want to turn your car off.

9. You no longer need to warm your car up for long periods of time, especially new cars. New cars are made to run when cold.

10. Don't travel at fast speeds in low gears unless you need the compression to slow down.

11. Try to drive the speed limit.

12. Try to accelerate slowly when leaving the stop light. It's not a competition with the driver in the lane next to you. The fastest person through the intersection just gets to spend more on gas.

13. No need to buy the highest priced gasoline. Most cars are built to run on regular unleaded. Check you owners manual or consult a mechanic. I have had many tell me that the more expensive gas is a waste of money.

14. Revving the engine needlessly wastes gas. There is no need to rev before you turn your vehicle off.

15. If at all possible, try to arrange car pools with co-workers to share the cost of commuting to work.

16. Walk, bike or run to your intended location whenever possible.

17. When the price is sky high, don't fill up. Wait for the price to go down before you fill up your tank. Filling up your tank when the price is peaking lets gas companies know that you are willing to pay ridiculous prices for gasoline.

18. And last, the biggest and most important step towards saving money on gas is always try to purchase vehicles that get good gas mileage. The difference between 20 miles-per-gallon and 40 miles-per-gallon is huge.

Trailer Buying Guide

Thinking about buying a cargo trailer, horse trailer or even a motorcycle trailer but aren't sure which trailer to buy? As you might have realized, choosing a trailer now-a-days can be perplexing. It's not surprising given the amount of trailer manufacturers and different types of trailers available.

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a trailer. One of the first considerations is to choose an established trailer manufacturer. As with most everything, you usually get what you paid for, so try to choose the best trailer that you can afford.

Deciding on what type of trailer you need for your application will help in narrowing down the manufacturers. There are trailers for almost every conceivable type of cargo, from motorcycles to horses to concessions. If you have to haul it, then there's a trailer made to haul it or at least one that can easily be converted to do the job.

After choosing a manufacturer, figure out what size trailer you'll need. Trailers come in several different widths and lengths. If you're considering an enclosed trailer, you'll also need to consider the height of the interior. If your trailer towing needs require that you spend very much time inside the trailer, choose one with enough interior height to keep you from bending your neck or back when standing.

Open or Enclosed Trailers

The next step in choosing a trailer is figuring out whether you will need an open or an enclosed trailer. An open trailer is one which exposes the cargo to the outside elements. If inclement weather isn't a factor for your cargo, then an open trailer may be the most economical choice. Open utility trailers can range in price from about $900 to $2500 new.

Open utility trailers are well suited for many applications including small landscaping businesses that are just starting out and need a way to haul their landscape equipment. As their business grows and they decide to move up to an enclosed trailer, the open utility trailer will still be incredibly useful for hauling all sorts of material such as mulch, rock and plants.

Another plus for open trailers is their weight. Open utility trailers tend to be lighter and provide less aerodynamic drag than enclosed trailers.

While open trailers are economical and very useful, they do not provide the protection from the outside environment that an enclosed trailer will. Enclosed trailers also offer an added measure of security because the trailer functions as a portable, lockable storage building.

Enclosed trailers tend to be heavier and less aerodynamic than open trailers. Enclosed trailers usually cost in the $1600 to $5000 range new, but can go much higher.

Single or Tandem Axle

Once you've decided on either an open utility trailer or an enclosed cargo trailer, you'll need to decide whether the trailer should have a single axle, dual axle or possibly even three to four axles.

Single axle trailers have just one load bearing axle. Trailers with single axles come with and without brakes, but as a general rule of thumb, most single axle open and enclosed trailers come without brakes. If you plan on hauling more than 3000 lbs, trailer brakes need to be considered. In fact, it's a legal requirement in most states.

Anything heavier than 3000 lbs should be hauled on a dual axle trailer, be it an open or enclosed trailer. Dual axle trailers use two load bearing axles and usually feature either leaf springs or independent torsion bar suspensions. Brakes are recommended for dual axle trailers and again may be required depending upon where you live. Also, dual axle trailers tend to track more accurately than single axle trailers over varying road surfaces.

Rear Access

If you decide on an enclosed trailer, next you have to decide on either a ramp rear door, double rear doors or one single barn-type door. Choosing the type of rear access will greatly depend on the cargo you intend to haul. If you're going to be hauling a motorcycle, race car or any other type vehicle, then a ramp rear door will provide the easiest loading and unloading method.

Be sure though when purchasing a trailer with a ramp door that the ramp is spring assisted as some of the ramp doors can be very heavy. Ramps are also nice for hauling furniture or other heavy items where you'll be using a dolly to load and unload them.

If you will be using the trailer quite often and will be in and out of it, then a ramp can become rather cumbersome. Enter double door trailers. It is much easier to open the doors, step in and get the tool or item you need and then step out and close the door than it is to drop a ramp every time you need access. Too, you have to consider the clearance needed for opening a ramp rear door.

Changing Oil and Filter

If you live within a city-limits, be sure to check with the city manager's office to see if they have any regulations about working on your own vehicle in your yard or driveway. Thanks!

Park your vehicle on a level surface and put blocks of wood or bricks behind the rear tires.

Jack the front of the vehicle up enough for you to get under it.

Be SURE to put jacks stands under the body (behind the front wheels) or put some timbers under the tires and let the weight off the jack.

Put a piece of cardboard, or an old blanket, underneath the vehicle to lie down on (I hate working on the *ground*). ?º

Get a pail or pan that will hold at least 6 or 7 quarts of liquid to drain the oil into.

It's a mess having a pan that holds 4 quarts and letting 5 quarts of old oil running into it! ?¼

You will need a wrench to remove the oil pan drain plug. PLEASE, don't use one of those "adjustable" things. All they do is "round" the shoulders on the plug. Get the proper tool.

You need a filter wrench that will fit your oil filter.

Be sure the engine has had time to cool down. Hot oil will burn you, and burn you, and keep on burning you! ?¼

Now, the best way to go about this is to see where the oil filter is. If it will be just above you, leave it until last. Old oil will *drip* on you (yes!)

Put the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug and remove the plug, slowly. Once you have it loose, you can remove it with your fingers, it's easier.

After the oil stops running out of the oil pan, put the plug back in by hand. Don't force it, make sure you can twist it up easy, you don't want to "cross-thread" it (you would be looking for me then!).

Tighten it with the wrench. When you get it "snug", put a small amount of "pressure" on the wrench. Not too much, but we don't want it to leak, either!

Now, move the drain pan (slowly) under the oil filter.

Take the filter wrench and slip it over the oil filter, being sure you have the handle where it will tighten up on the filter when you pull the handle toward you.

Pull the filter wrench handle toward you. Sometimes this might take quite a lot of pressure. When the oil filter breaks loose you can remove the wrench and turn it with your hand.

Have on cloth gloves or use paper towels because oil will probably run down the side of the filter.

Continue to twist the filter off and put it into the drain pan.

Unless your oil filter is positioned upside-down, you want to pour fresh oil into it.

Be sure to put oil on the rubber gasket. That protects the seal and makes it easier to remove next time.

As you put the new filter onto the threaded spout, be VERY careful not to "cross-thread" it. If you can twist it easily, you're ok.

Once you get it snug, tighten it as much as you can with your hand (unless you're a football player).

Now, I usually take the filter wrench and turn it about an inch, or less. You don't want to get it too tight, it will squeeze the mating material and cause oil to seep from around it.

Now, jack the car up and take the supports out and let the vehicle down on its tires.

Raise the hood and remove the oil filler cap (the 710 if your cap is backward and has OIL written on it) ?º.

Most vehicles take 5 quarts (with filter) to refill them. Some take only 4.5 quarts.

I usually put in 4 quarts, crank the engine, check the oil pressure gauge, or light; check for leaks underneath the vehicle (plug/filter), then turn the engine off.

Let the vehicle set for about 15-20 minutes.

Pull the oil dipstick out and wipe it off. Replace it and pull it back out and look where the oil level is.

If it's just a quarter to a half inch from the "Full" mark, I'll add only a half-quart of oil, then check it again.

You will need to take the old oil and filter to a repair shop or a disposal location to discard it.

PLEASE, don't pour it out on the ground! EPA!!! Remember, I TOLD you so! ?º

So, you don't have to wait in line at the *quick* places to get your oil changed anymore! Never, ever, again.
